What is the difference between a selfie stick and a monopod when it comes to a phone? Types of selfie sticks.

Today it is very fashionable to photograph yourself and everything around you on your phone. A selfie stick simplifies this task at times, you need to choose a good angle, press the button on the monopod - and the photo is ready. In digital stores, the assortment of such accessories is large, so that anyone can choose the right product for their device.

What is a selfie stick

A selfie stick, as the product is also called, is a tool that allows you to take a photo at a distance beyond an arm's length. Thanks to this, a large number of people are placed in the frame, the photographer himself and a wide-angle picture is obtained. The selfie stick is a tripod handle with a holder and a remote control. Many modern selfie products have built-in Bluetooth, which makes it easy to control your smartphone (or other device). Some monopods are equipped with a mirror to help you evaluate the angle, facial expression and future shot.

Who invented

There are 2 versions regarding the appearance of a monopod. According to one of them, the selfie stick was invented 30 years ago in the United States by two Japanese designers and inventors. Then she was not widely used and was used for shooting photos by professional photographers. According to the second version put forward by Times magazine, the selfie stick was not invented until 2014. The first self-portrait was taken by photographer Robert Cornelius about 200 years ago.

How to use

If you don't know how to use a selfie stick with and without a button, follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Place your device in the monopod holder, adjust its position, secure with the screw.
  2. Extend the telescopic stick to the desired length, set a timer on your phone, take a photo.
  3. If the selfie stick has Bluetooth function, synchronize both devices after installation, turn on the camera on the phone and use the remote control on the stick to take a picture.
  4. If the selfie stick has built-in Bluetooth, then the phone is connected to it using a wire inserted into the headphone jack. You do not need to sync devices. The photo is taken in the usual way - by pressing a button.

How to choose a selfie stick

To find out how much a selfie stick for your phone costs, you need to contact a telescopic tripod sales center or an online store. The cost of a selfie stick depends on its quality, battery charging and capacity, design, camera control, and functionality. Online stores often hold promotions, sales of goods with discounts, which makes it possible to purchase goods relatively cheaply. In addition, you can make a purchase and order the delivery of the product by mail to Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia.

If you do not know how to choose a selfie stick, follow the recommendations of the experts:

  1. The bluetooth button is on the stick. Such a device is the choice of most users, since it is convenient to take pictures with the control button without using wires and other devices.
  2. A stick with a separate control panel. This product is less convenient to use because both hands will be occupied.
  3. In new devices, the button is on the handle and there is a wire for connecting the phone to the holder. It is convenient for them to take a photo, and there is still no need for recharging.
  4. Selfie stick without buttons. This is a bulky device that requires setting a timer on the phone's camera, but its cost will be an order of magnitude lower than that of its predecessors.

Video

Is there a person among your acquaintances who would not know what a selfie is? At a time when all social networks are packed with selfie photos! Therefore, let's say simply: selfies are photographing yourself.

Usually, a selfie on a smartphone is taken either with the front camera from the hand, or they take a picture of their reflection with the main camera. Agree, both ways are not ideal. In the first case, the background is not always visible, and the person does not completely enter the frame. In the second case, the phone is in the frame, the eyes are looking in the wrong direction, and outside the premises, such a frame cannot be taken.

And here the Japanese appear, who remember their invention of 1995 (by the way, then ranked on the list of the most useless inventions). As a result, TIME magazine recognizes the selfie stick as one of the best inventions of 2014. If just a year before that everyone was making fun of strange people with some kind of short fishing rods, then by 2015 there came a realization of how useful this accessory can be.

Indeed, how can you even more easily capture yourself or the whole company without outside help, from the most unusual angles?

In fact, a classic monopod for a camera is used as a stick, but slightly modified. Let's try to understand all the variety of options that exist at the moment.

What kind of selfie sticks are there?

Now you can find a wide variety of selfie monopods, ranging from a simple telescopic stick to clever devices with a built-in battery and connection to the phone via Bluetooth.

Let's take a look at the most popular ones.

1. Classic telescopic monopod for phone and action cameras.

Perhaps this monopod was one of the first to appear massively on the market. It is understandable - what could be simpler than an ordinary steel telescopic pole that can be expanded from 23cm to 109cm? At the end of the monopod, the manufacturer added a phone mount, and voila - the selfie stick is ready.

It should be noted that the length of 109cm is quite enough to take a full-length selfie.

How does a selfie stick work?

  • fix the smartphone in a special mount

Advantages: low price, low weight, great length.

Disadvantages: does not have phone control buttons (however, this drawback can be eliminated by purchasing a Bluetooth remote control for the phone); it is possible to turn the phone when shaking.

2. Selfie stick with audio connection

Smartphone manufacturers have provided the ability to release the camera using a cable connected through the audio jack. This was used by the inventors of the next version of the monopod.

This selfie stick connects to your phone via a 3.5mm audio jack and does not require any additional steps to start taking pictures of yourself. When folded, this stick is more compact - its length is 20cm. It should be noted that the maximum length in the unfolded state is "only" 90 cm, which, in other words, is quite enough for most situations.

The big advantage is that the monopod has a ball mount at the end. This allows you to fix the phone not only at any angle of inclination, but also turn it to the side.

  • insert the wire on the selfie stick into the audio jack of the phone.
  • choose the desired angle
  • press the button on the monopod.

Advantages: low weight; the presence of a button; low price.

Disadvantages: the audio jack is busy; an adapter is required to connect to a phone that has a connector other than 3.5mm; it is possible to turn the phone when shaking.

3. Telescopic selfie stick with a button

Probably the most popular selfie stick currently. It looks almost the same as the first model, but it has a number of advantages.

This monopod has a built-in Bluetooth transmitter, thanks to which a photo on the phone is taken by pressing a button on the stick itself. Built-in battery recharges from USB in less than 1 hour

Also, the selfie monopod is equipped with a more reliable mount for the phone, fixing it on both sides.

The telescopic stick has the same extended length as the previous version - 90cm.

Advantages: relatively low price, low weight, presence of a button.

Disadvantages: requires recharging, Bluetooth is busy.

4. Multifunctional selfie stick (Bluetooth remote, monopod, tripod)

It would seem that nothing new can be invented, but we came across another very interesting specimen.

This is not just a selfie stick that you can hold in your hands, it can also be installed permanently and controlled remotely.

This selfie stick consists of 4 parts: a phone mount, a grip with control buttons, a telescopic stick, and a tripod (tripod) for placing the stick on a flat surface.

Despite the large number of sections, the monopod is quite lightweight.

The Selfie Monopod has a built-in rechargeable battery and Bluetooth transmitter. In addition to the standard "photo" button, the handle also contains the "+" and "-" zoom control buttons. This very handle with control buttons can be used as a separate, independent remote control for your smartphone.

The attachment points of the selfie stick sections are made of sufficient quality and did not cause us fears that the monopod will disintegrate

The phone mounts in a standard way, like most selfie sticks.

In order to install the monopod permanently, it is enough to unfold the tripod included in the kit, and fix either one of the sections in it, or immediately the mount for the phone. A telephone mounted on such a tripod can be controlled from a distance of up to 10 meters.

The unfolded length of the selfie stick is 80cm.

What's included in the selfie stick kit?

1 x Handle with Bluetooth and buttons
1 x Telescopic monopod

1 x Storage pouch
1 x USB wire

How does a selfie stick work?

  • turn on the selfie stick using the switch on the bottom.
  • turn on Bluetooth on your phone.
  • find a selfie stick in the list of available devices.
  • connect with selfie monopod.
  • fix the smartphone in a special mount on a stick
  • open the Camera or Camera 360 application on your phone.
  • choose the desired angle
  • press the button on the monopod.

Advantages: versatility; the presence of additional buttons; stylish design; real distance.

Disadvantages: requires recharging; the price is above average; the volume of the entire set; The Bluetooth channel is busy.

5. Large telescopic monopod for phone and action cameras.

Finally, we would like to consider another monopod model, which is equipped with neither a wire nor a Bluetooth module. This is because it was originally created for action cameras. However, this model has several significant advantages for use as a selfie stick with a smartphone.

Firstly, its length in the unfolded state is 123 cm, which makes it possible to capture a much larger scene in the frame.

Secondly, each other segment is fixed with a clamp, which prevents arbitrary folding / unfolding

Thirdly, the strength of its elements allows you to install not only a phone, but even a mirrorless camera on a stick, which makes this monopod the most versatile of those we have reviewed.

And the problem of the lack of a button is solved quite simply by purchasing a Bluetooth remote control.

How does a selfie stick work?

In order to take a selfie with this monopod you need:

  • fix the smartphone in a special mount
  • enable timer photo mode on your phone
  • choose the best angle for a selfie and wait for the phone to take a picture of you

If you have purchased a special Bluetooth remote control for your phone, then the steps will be as follows:

  • fix the smartphone in a special mount
  • link the phone with the wireless remote control for the smartphone
  • choose the best angle for selfie
  • press a button on the remote to capture yourself

Advantages: very long length; strong hold; versatility.

Disadvantages: does not have phone control buttons (however, this drawback can be eliminated by purchasing a Bluetooth remote control for the phone); tangible weight; price.

Today we will talk about choosing such a device that is already so familiar to a modern person as a selfie stick, or a monopod for a smartphone (it is sometimes called a “hoe”). Let's talk about how to choose a selfie stick for your phone, on which you can install not only a smartphone, but also a small camera. Such a device will come in handy when traveling for memorable photos. With the help of a good monopod, you can make a good video report. We hope you find our tips helpful. Let's consider the main selection criteria in more detail.

Camera shutter button

There are 2 types of camera shutter mechanisms - wireless and wired. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, so which option to choose is a matter of your personal preference.

As for the differences, here are what they are:

  • The wired mechanism provides for the use of a special wire with a plug, which is inserted into the socket of a mobile gadget. The handle of the monopod is equipped with a button. The shutter is released when the button is pressed.
  • The wireless mechanism provides for the use of the Bluetooth button on the handle of the selfie stick or the remote control. It runs on "tablets" (AA batteries) or built-in rechargeable battery. The advantage of such a device is that it works from a distance. Perhaps not just pressing the start button, but also adjusting the focus, switching from the rear camera to the front one, choosing a photo or video mode.

Fastening

If you are thinking about how to choose a selfie stick, the reliability of fixing the phone is perhaps the main requirement for a monopod. The more rubberized inserts the stick is equipped with, the more reliable this mount is.

Important! This criterion can only be verified by practice. Ask the seller to attach the mobile device to a stick and shake it.

Stick making material

Try to bend the structure with a little effort. If the stick is bent like a rod, it’s better not to buy it. As in the case just described, the smartphone test is mandatory. The pipe should not bend under the weight of the gadget.

Important! If you are planning underwater filming, choose a waterproof device. Its cost is higher, in comparison with the ordinary model, by about 20%. But, accordingly, the phone itself must meet these requirements. Ours will help you choose the best option.

Dimensions and weight

Ideally, if the monopod fits in a bag, so it is irrational to purchase a device that is too long. Moreover, if you are going on a trip, it is much better to take a minimum of things.

Important! It is desirable that the handle is made of rubberized or soft plastic. In this case, it will not slide. Handles equipped with special loops are also convenient.

Smartphone tilt

A special mechanism of a selfie stick (2D or 3D-heads) allows the mobile device to rotate in two (2D) or three (3D) axes. Some models have ball heads similar to those found on camera tripods.

Ease of use

Almost all models of selfie sticks are telescopic (the sections extend “one from the other”). In inexpensive monopods, over time, the severity of smartphones causes the sections to scroll. To avoid this, high-quality models are equipped with length clamps, and special grooves are applied to the tripod.

The total length of products depends on the number of sections:

  • In five-section models, the length of the device is 0.75-1.0 m.
  • In six- to seven-section models, the total length of the device ranges between 0.8-1.2 m.

Important! The shorter each of the sections and the greater their number, the more regulation possibilities.

Yes, we took it in hand, walked with it and defiantly took pictures in front of everyone. If at the sight of a selfie stick you wiggle your nose, then you are just envious. Go ahead: just admit it to yourself right away and find the one that works best for you. Let's compare!

"Fu, selfie"

We repeat: everyone should have a selfie stick... Selfie stick, selfie stick - call it whatever you like, the essence remains the same. This is not just a tool for pretentious selfies (phew, damn it) with friends, but also a handy thing for taking creative photos. You will never take such angles and shots as with a selfie stick with your hands. Unless, of course, you have two-meter hands. Then you need to see a doctor.

By the way, if you hate selfie sticks, then you are in the minority. So you are a real and tough hipster. Oops.

In general, to put aside stupid hatred, it does not paint anyone. Shoot a monocle: all normal boys and girls walk around with selfies and take cool pictures for life, where not only their face is placed, but also something interesting. We are not shy!

What was tested

We cleared our coffee table of latte macchiato and morning grechotto. And then we put three models of monopods for sefli there. From right to left: KJStar Z07-5, Fotopro Selfie Monopod and Momax selfifit... All are provided by the store iCases, so you can now run into the comments and write how scary it is to live in this world. For adequate, we continue the review.

These three monopods are really different: in mechanism, assembly, quality, principle of operation and price. There is an option for everyone, so we compare all three with each other, let's look for the pros and cons. The criteria are ...

1. Ease of use

Here Momax selfifit tears all the other sticks to shreds. If anything, it's on the right - bright blue. There are other color variations, but we are not talking about them now. The soft handle in this model adequately supports the grip and makes it strong without straining the wrist once again. Everything is tactile here, too.

The middle one is located in the middle: Fotopro Selfie Monopod has a completely plastic handle, but has an ergonomic shape and, in my subjective opinion, a little less weight.

And only then he joins the party KJStar Z07-5... I'm not a fan of such a tough, rubberized handle, but you can't blame her for one thing: you can't drop such a monopod out of your hand if you want to.

Total. Momax is the most comfortable, Fotopro is a little lighter and better by weight, and KJStar is suitable for those who do not trust their hands.

2. Portability

Unfortunately, this photo does not show the KJStar(the one on the left). It is huge, but if you replace it with any other, then the "budget" monopod in terms of portability simply will not have competitors. It is very thin and almost pocketable.

By the totality of all parameters, I like it better Fotopro Selife Monopod... Although it is thicker than the KJStar, it has a more monolithic structure and, together with the nozzle, will be an order of magnitude smaller than its competitors.

Momax it loses in terms of portability due to its handle and the tricky design of the telescopic tube: there are clamps for fixing the length of the "stick". But he looks better than others.

Total... Fotopro Selfie Monopod is the smallest of the three. The KJStar would have won if it hadn't been for the bulky attachment, and Momax was clearly not trying to win this event.

3. The quality of the smartphone mount

The wildest here, of course, looks like "dock" KJStar... Any smartphone with a diagonal of 3.5 or more fits there, but I advise you to try on yours before buying if you own any fancy Android device. The key advantage of this fastener is its reliability with minimal pressure on the device. Inside there is a soft backing, and the gadget is pressed with a rubber pad.

The most accurate was the holder from Fotopro... The upper part slides up and presses the smartphone rather tightly. Looks better than other options and does not leave marks due to rubberized interlayers at the bottom and top.

Momax here I was a little surprised. The shape of the mount is not quite usual, that's for sure. It holds it very reliably, but I was not delighted with the fact that the metal part (the one at the top) somehow rubs roughly against the edge of the iPhone. Maybe I’m afraid in vain, because there are no traces left there.

Total... The KJStar has the most gentle smartphone mount ever. But installing an iPhone there is inconvenient, a lot of time and tinkering with an elastic band. Once again, the Fotopro monopod is a middling one, whose holder looks better than the others and is easy to open / close. Momax is kind of peculiar, like nothing, but the metal at the top seems to be superfluous.

P.S. In all three models, the mounts are universal and interchangeable.

4. Maximum tube length and quality

Here we have a surprise. The cheapest option, KJStar Z07-5, turned out to be the longest, and by a significant margin. In a hard comparison, however, the difference is small: only 10% of the total length of other models. But this must be borne in mind. The quality of the metal is poor and I suspect it will start to creak pretty quickly.

And again, again Fotopro neatly located in the middle in all respects. It is not the longest, but also not the shortest. I liked not the length more, but the fact that it was Fotopro that did not bend under the weight of the iPhone in a fully extended state. Reliable!

Momax was shorter than the others. But on the other hand, it is protected from moisture and will not give up the skates as soon as you go into the water with it. This is an important point, for many it will be key in choosing a model.

Total. KJStar is the longest, but not the most reliable. Fotopro is the most reliable, does not bend under an iPhone. And the Momax is the only monopod of the three that is water-resistant and can be folded out easily even when fully submerged.

5. Shutter buttons

All monopods are somehow equipped with such buttons that are connected either by cable or via Bluetooth. In our case, the entire "triplet" is wireless. Fotopro has a whole bunch of buttons: toggle Android or iOS compatibility mode, turn on the BT transmission, power and, of course, the shutter release. No matter how much we tried to connect it to the iPhone, it did not work. KJStar demonstrates only one button - the shutter, and is turned on by a slider at the bottom of the handle. But she worked.

It showed itself best of all here Momax selfifit... A separate keychain instantly released the shutter, worked at a very decent distance and did not interfere at all: so, I just put it under the thumb of my hand holding a monopod with an iPhone. Total- it was he who became the leader in this test. The keychain had to be used with Fotopro, but there was no difference for obvious reasons.

Impressions of Momax Selfifit

I recommend Momax Selfifit to those looking for a cute monopod as a gift, not just themselves. It has the highest quality packaging, the richest set of accessories (button, case, headband, cable) and the easiest way to "slide apart" - a godsend for girls and those who do not want to fiddle with a stick at the most crucial moment. The button is very convenient, you can hide it and all that. And also he not afraid of water!

Impressions of the KJStar Z07-5

This cheapest model in the market that can be used without crying. You can take it for yourself, if the quality of the design and the convenience of placing and removing the phone are not very important. I don't really like the ergonomics, but the length here is enough for everyone. The mount is very large and unsightly, but it won't scratch the iPhone in any way, even in theory.

Good day, my dear readers! We are in touch with you, Timur Mustaev.
Have you stopped liking your own photos? Do you want to photograph yourself, but annoying constant inconvenience in shooting and the quality of the frame? You constantly hear about some kind of selfie sticks, but do not understand what they are talking about? It's time to create unforgettable images that amaze your imagination!

To do this, you need to have an idea of which selfie stick is better wired or wireless. Which monopod will be most convenient and practical to use for creating your photo masterpieces? Let's figure it out.

Before you start, take a look at the picture. Do you like the selfie? I bought this to a friend for his birthday. You can see where I bought it at the end of the article. There is also a video for him.

The market for gadgets and accessories is so developed that it is quite difficult at first glance to choose something for yourself. Of course, sellers in stores can always suggest and advise something, but as practice shows, they pursue their own goals, and sometimes impose those models that are not of good quality, but the price for them is quite high.

Therefore, I suggest that you do not seek help from these pseudo-experts, but independently study the information below. It will help you figure out how to choose a useful and high-quality monopod.

Types of popular tripods

  • Wire models;
  • Remote control models;
  • Models with a button.

Monopods for selfies with a wire have a special cord that connects the tripod to a smartphone, and also has a button built into the handle of the monopod. For such a device, the plus is that it does not need to be recharged at all. it charges itself via the cord from the smartphone. But, if you plan to take a lot of selfies, and the battery on the phone runs out very quickly, then charging the monopod can become problematic.

If this happens near access to power sources, then there will be no problems recharging the smartphone, and if it happened somewhere in nature, you can immediately forget about interesting pictures. This type of selfie stick also has its weak point - a cord that can be easily damaged. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully and carefully use such a monopod for selfies.

In models with a remote control, the shutter function is performed by a Bluetooth remote control. Everything is very simple, a button is pressed and a picture is taken at the same moment. It is inconvenient to use when you need at least one free hand, because you have to hold both the tripod and the remote control. A very unpleasant moment is that sometimes such models may not be compatible with your gadgets.

Therefore, when buying, be sure to check how the selfie stick works with the phone, without leaving the checkout. The remote button can constantly get lost and annoy you with its loss. There are also two buttons on the remote, pressing the wrong one, there is a chance to miss a cool frame. This model provides you with a minimum level of comfort.

You can buy here.

Monopods with a button are the best solution among tripods with remotes and cords. They do not connect to the phone in any way, they connect using Bluetooth, which integrates with the smartphone. Such models have the most durable mounts, which will not give you the opportunity to damage the phone if you want to. The knee of the tripod does not rotate, as there is a special groove along the entire tripod.

You will not care whether the remote from the selfie stick is lost or the cord deteriorates, these problems will definitely not visit you. These models have built-in batteries, and this will allow you to take a huge number of amazing selfies.

This model is much more successful than the previous ones and is devoid of the shortcomings of its counterparts. With its help, you will get magical shots with the maximum comfort of its use.
Of course, you have to pay for the convenience, so the price for such a pleasure is quite high, but on the other hand, you will use the most advanced and functional gadget.

Summing up all of the above, I can conclude that the most inconvenient monopod for selfies is a monopod with a remote control, the most fragile is a monopod with a cord, the best in most parameters is a wireless monopod with a button.

Now it’s just your choice.

Few recommendations. As I wrote in previous articles, I bought this one for my friend (lover of amazing selfies) for his birthday selfie stick monopod, and to this day, and enough time has passed, he still enjoys this device. He likes him so much that every time we see him, he thanks me for my gift. I'm not a selfie fan, and I don't understand his joy! But to each, his own!

The video below shows the model I donated. Under the video, I left links where I bought this device. Why this particular accessory? Quite a good price for such a device, good build quality, lightweight and very compact, has additional functionality, and most importantly, it was appreciated by my friend. Generally on Aliexpress ( link on the site), you can find many different models of selfie sticks for every taste and color and for your wallet. Take your pick!

If the possibilities allow, do not skimp and purchase a wireless monopod with a button. It will serve you for many years and will allow you to replenish your collection with beautiful and high-quality photographs.

On this I will finish the article, good shopping and gorgeous photos. If you liked the article, let your friends read it on social networks. Share, comment, this is only welcome! Bye Bye.

All the best to you, Timur Mustaev.
